Ever since the puma cub Sierra turned up at the zoo, Anjana the chimpanzee  has helped her human carers with all the feeding and cuddling duties.

The chimpanzee, who is five, has lived her whole life at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS) in South Carolina, U.S.A.

Park director Dr Bhagavan Antle said: ‘Chimpanzees are great learners and imitators so it wasn’t long before she took on the right behaviours that were necessary to keep the kittens in line.’

Penguin Gets Swimsuit

A bald penguin who lost all of his feathers has been given a wetsuit to wear, to protect him from sunburn.

Ralph, a nine-year-old Humboldt penguin, has sensitive pink skin after he lost all of his feathers in one day while moulting, instead of in the usual four to six weeks.

His keepers at the Marwell Wildlife Park in Hampshire cut up a staff member’s wetsuit to give him extra protection from the sun.

David White, who is assistant manager of Penguin World at Marwell, said he and colleagues thought about covering Ralph in suncream before hitting on the wetsuit idea.

“If we hadn’t come up with the wetsuit we would have had to keep him inside to stop him burning.

“That would have made him really miserable because penguins are such sociable creatures. This way he can happily mess around with the rest of the group.”

Ralph will now wear his suit for around three weeks while his new feathers grow.
